Title: Medieval spur
Item Name: Animal Equipment

Ornate metal spur, possibly of 12th-13th century date. An unusually ornate example, with incised decoration. On the straight upper section there are chevron and dot patterns, with rows of short strokes along some of the edges. The two long bars that would have curved around the foot have elaborate curvilinear designs, possibly inlaid with gold and silver (of which some small traces remain). Ends in double loops (one of which is missing) for fastening the leather strap. Found on one of the lender's fields, whilst he was digging a hole to replace a fence post. Some old horse shoes have been found in the same field.
