Item Name: Buildings

Postcard showing Monica Wilkin and her Orchestra in the Shell Bandstand that used to stand outside the Orangery at Sewerby Hall. Musical entertainment has been an attraction at Sewerby since the park opened. As early as February 1936 an advertisement was placed ‘for the provision of a ladies’ orchestra consisting of five musicians, including player conductress, from 30th May to 30th September next to give musical performances in the grounds daily.’ The job went to Miss Monica Wilkin. She directed a ladies orchestra of eight musicians who performed on the bandstand that stood near the front of the Orangery.
