Thomas Edison 'Gem' phonograph, an early forerunner of the gramophone which played recordings on wax cylinders.There is a metal plate on the front with patent information and a serial number 668953. A broken wax cylinder is still in place. On the wooden case lid is printed in black on gold 'ribbons' Edison Gem Phonograph'. Inside the cover is coloured green with a handle at the top and two screws at the sides to attatch it to the body of the machine so it can be carried. There is also a brass tipped horn.
