Title: Alcyone, London
Item Name: Sea and Shipping

Oval photograph of G.R. Thorpe, bosun of the 'Alcyone' in a wooden frame in the form of a miniature ships lifebelt. In 1917 George Robert Thorpe was bosun on the Ketch "Alcyone" of which his father George William Thorpe was the maker. That year on the 1st August the "Alcyone" was stopped in the Channel by a German U-Boat and G.R. Thorpe was taken aboard while the rest of the crew were permitted to leave the Alcyone in a small boat. The "Alcyone" was then sunk, whereupon the U boat was itself attacked by a British E Boat. In the confusion, G.R. Thorpe dived off the U-boat before he could be taken below and was subsequently picked up. Later he was to be first mate of the "Faxfleet", whose master was Captain Greenwood.
