Title: woolwork picture
Item Name: Sea and Shipping

Sailor's woolwork picture. Embroidered woollen panel on a wooden board. Depicts a square-rigged, three masted vessel with abnormally long bowsprit and flying a Red Ensign. Sailing to the right, past land with a cottage and a brown tower. A Red Ensign is also flying from the tower. Small sailing vessel to the left. This sort of work was done by sailors when 'off watch' to fill their leisure hours while at sea. Sailing ships were always crewed to be able to deal with any emergency, so there were sometimes long periods when those seaman not actually needed to man the ship were effectively idle, and spent the time engaged in craft activities.
