Item Name: Special Events

Description:

Sepia tinted photograph of five gentlemen in suits and a lady with an elaborate floral hat, fur stole and a parasol, standing in a yard, building to the right. A pile of empty wicker baskets in the foreground. Early 1900's.William Spencer was the headmaster of Beverley S H 2017Wesleyan School for 39 years from 1848 to 1887. Spencer’s role in the school was so influential that after his death it was renamed the Spencer Council School. In his will he left a bequest fund for oranges to be given to the children every year. ‘Orange Day’ was celebrated at the school until 1967 when it closed its door for the last time and the children were transferred to the new Swinemoor County Junior School. Today, although the funds for buying oranges have long since gone, the teachers of Swinemoor School still maintain the tradition of distributing oranges each year.
