Title: John Wilkinson half penny tokens
Item Name: Trade

Description:

Four copper half penny tokens of 1787, 1788, 1790 & 1792. Obverse:Head facing right; legend - 'John Wilkinson, Iron Master'. Reverse: interior of iron works. Wilkinson (1728-1808) was one of the leading figures of the industrial revolution in Britain in the 18th century and was absolutely obsessed with the importance of iron - he was even buried in an iron coffin. Wilkinson first issued these tokens in 1787 and they were redeemable only at certain businesses set up by him. Reverse designs vary on this type of token - some have a sailing ship and the edge may bear the names of business premises. Forgeries are known to exist.
