Title: Lead sack seal

Description:

Russian lead sack/bag seal, with cyrillic lettering on both sides and the date 1770. One side has NP A(?)IV 12 (the 12 indicating the customs duty in kopecks). The NP possibly indicates the Russian port of Archangel. The reverse bears the name VAVINOV and N24 - the number of the sealing tongs used to apply the stamp. Such seals were applied to Russian flax/hemp sacks in the late 18th/early 19th centuries as part of the customs process when exporting goods through Baltic sea ports. Part of metal detecting collection belonging to the late Terry Britten.
