Title: Snow shoes

Plywood box shaped like an exaggerated coffin, which has leather hinges and a buckle fastening, containing a pair of snow shoes. There is also a brass plaque inscribed '1939-1945, John Howard Birkitt 6th Batt. Green Howards, 28th June 1940(?)'. Birkitt was apprenticed to a joiner at a shipyard, sailed to Newfoundland on the Wilfred Grenfell expedition, went to India with the Green Howards regiment (returning in 1938) and then married. He died on 28th June 1942. See also 1997.809.
