Title: Wreck of the "Produce", of Folkstone, February 1871
Item Name: Painting

Maker(s):
Allerston, John Taylor

Description:

Bridlington Bay; sailing vessel in stormy sea with man on up-turned lifeboat on right, man in sea in left foreground. Relates to the "Great Gale" of February 1871. Allerston painted numerous scenes from this disaster and this particular scene (with the lifeboat "Harbinger" capsized) is one that he returned to frequently. Sometimes his paintings of individual ships are reflected in his works showing lines of sinking vessels. However, Allerston did not always stick strictly to historical events. He also painted another "Produce" being lost (on July 10th 1871), which seems an unlikely coincidence!
