Description:

Half model of the steam ships "Aire" and "Calder", in boxwood, showing the starboard side. Painted black above the waterline and lemon below it. 1:48 scale. The ships were built by William Dobson & Co. at Walker-on-Tyne, Newcastle - the "Aire" in 1886 and the "Calder" in 1887. See also the SS Derwent, which was of the same design. They were owned by the Goole Steam Shipping Co. (until 1905), then the Yorks. Railway Co. (c1906-1922) and then the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Co. / T.W. Ward Ltd. In 1931, the "Aire" was replaced in the LMS fleet by another vessel of the same name. The SS "Calder" is not listed in the Lloyd's register after 1926-7. Shipbuilders details engraved on plaque on base. Mahogany backboard and brass stanchions. the remainder of the original wooden case has been removed and perspex substituted.
