Title: Wreck of Italian wheat-laden brig
Item Name: Painting

Maker(s):
Allerston, John Taylor

Description:

Bridlington, ruined pier on left, pieces of wreckage and a figure in foreground, figures in mid distance near waters edge looking at grounded sailing ship. Written on back of painting in ink "2221 wreck of an Italian wheat laden brig." Allerston produced many of these very basic watercolours, often with some details only pencilled in. Some were perhaps intended as sketches for larger works, but others may have been "lightening sketches" dashed off quickly for sale to tourists. The brig was a small, 2-masted vessel of the 18th/19th centuries, used for coastal and deep sea trading.
